As part of the "SDGs Business Verification Survey with the Private Sector for Developing the Sanuki Garlic Value Chain in Nghe An" project (2023–2026), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently collaborated with local authorities to hold a technical training workshop on Sanuki garlic cultivation in Na Ngoi commune, Nghe An province.

The Farmers' Co-op proposed that the Farmers in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, go to JICA as a contribution toward addressing socio-economic challenges in developing countries. It is part of JICA's mission to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The workshop attracted 60 participants from 46 households in and around Na Ngoi, mostly ethnic minorities. These residents expressed interest in learning Sanuki garlic cultivation techniques and were eager to participate in the project.

Following a period of trial cultivation, the project successfully grew high-quality garlic comparable to that produced in Kagawa, thanks to the traditional Japanese cultivation techniques adapted to Nghe An's loAn'sclimate and soil conditions.

The project supports ethnic minority communities in Nghe An in piloting production, classification, processing, distribution, and market research for locally grown Sanuki garlic. It also includes the development of a distribution strategy targeting the domestic market.

Looking ahead, the project may expand to include other crops, such as vegetables and fruits, thereby diversifying local agriculture and increasing its value.

In the future, JICA plans to continue supporting agricultural development in Nghe An province to build strong, trust-based relationships with local communities. The ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable and inclusive model that improves livelihoods in Vietnam's rural, remote, and mountainous areas.
