Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture is seeking to enhance cooperation with Viet Nam in the fields of green hydrogen and green ammonia, supporting the energy transition and Net Zero goals.

During his recent visit and working trip to Viet Nam, Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, Nagasaki Kotaro, held meetings with leaders in Hanoi and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to discuss long-term cooperation directions in green development, clean technology, and human resource training.

At a meeting with Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai on May 11, Governor Nagasaki Kotaro said Yamanashi is one of Japan’s leading localities in the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia. He affirmed that the prefecture is ready to cooperate with Viet Nam in technology transfer, engineer training, and business connectivity to promote clean energy projects in the coming period.

Under Yamanashi’s leadership, green hydrogen is emerging as a strategic direction in Japan’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. With strong renewable energy potential, Viet Nam is considered a suitable market for expanding investment cooperation and developing the green hydrogen value chain in Asia.

Welcoming the Japanese delegation, Deputy Minister Truong Thanh Hoai highly appreciated Japan’s pioneering role in promoting energy transition in Asia as well as its cooperation initiatives with Viet Nam in clean energy.

According to him, green hydrogen and green ammonia will play an important role in Viet Nam’s long-term green growth strategy and carbon neutrality goals. However, production costs remain high at present, so Viet Nam is prioritizing pilot projects before expanding to commercial scale.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade also proposed that Yamanashi study the implementation of several pilot projects in localities with strong renewable energy potential such as Quang Tri Province, which has advantages in wind and solar power.

Earlier, on May 10, the Yamanashi delegation met with Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Vu Dai Thang. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged experience in green urban development, low-emission transport, and the application of technology in urban management.

Hanoi’s leaders said the city is rolling out a range of measures to build a greener and smarter urban model. These include establishing low-emission zones, encouraging the use of electric vehicles, and speeding up the energy transition. In this context, Yamanashi is considered a suitable partner thanks to its strengths in green technology and sustainable development.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation in education and training, student exchanges, and the development of high-quality human resources to support the green transition process in the future.

Concluding the visit, Governor Nagasaki Kotaro said Yamanashi Prefecture would continue promoting business connectivity between the two countries and expand research cooperation on green hydrogen production with Viet Nam. He also invited the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade to attend the International Green Hydrogen Conference hosted by Yamanashi at the end of 2026.
