EU launches over €1.1M shrimp project in Ca Mau province

An over 30-billion-VND 'Sustainable Shrimp Governance' project launched in Ca Mau aims to boost a green, transparent, and sustainable shrimp value chain.

Recently, the provincial Union of Friendship Organizations, in collaboration with the ActionAid International Representative Office in Viet Nam, held a launch workshop for the "Sustainable Shrimp Governance" (SSVN) project. Attending the workshop were Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ngo Vu Thang and nearly 100 delegates representing departments, agencies, localities, cooperatives, enterprises and shrimp farmers.

At the workshop, delegates exchanged experiences and discussed solutions to strengthen value chain linkages, promoting the shrimp industry's development in a green, transparent and sustainable direction, Ca Mau Newspaper reported.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ngo Vu Thang emphasized that the "Sustainable Shrimp Governance" project will contribute to enhancing added value and competitiveness, promoting the sustainable development of the shrimp industry.

The project has a total budget of EUR 1.1 million (over 30 billion VND), co-funded by the European Union and ActionAid International, and will be implemented from October 2025 to the end of March 2029. The project focuses on building a low-emission Vietnamese shrimp brand in the communes of Long Dien, Dong Hai, Ganh Hao, An Trach and Dinh Thanh in Ca Mau province, as well as in other provinces in the region involved in shrimp farming, processing and exporting.

Ms. Brenda A. Candries, a representative of the European Union Delegation to Viet Nam, affirmed that the project is an investment in the future of Viet Nam's shrimp industry, contributing to building a sustainable Mekong Delta that effectively adapts to climate change.

Ms. Hoang Phuong Thao, Country Director of ActionAid International in Viet Nam, emphasized that in the context of the shrimp industry facing multiple challenges, the project not only helps improve the capacity of farmers but also strengthens coordination among stakeholders, aiming to build a transparent, responsible and sustainable shrimp value chain.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ngo Vu Thang highly appreciated the support from the European Union and ActionAid International in Viet Nam for the development of the province's shrimp industry. He also expressed expectations that the project will contribute to improving governance capacity, scaling up sustainable production models, enhancing added value and competitiveness, and continuing to affirm the shrimp industry's position as a key commodity for both Ca Mau province and the country.
