Dak Lak launches forest emissions reduction project

Recently, in Dak Phoi Commune, the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Environment, in coordination with the Dak Phoi Commune People's Committee, organized the kick-off workshop for the Project on Emission Reductions in Vietnam's Central Highlands and South Central Coast. The project aims to support the implementation of the National REDD+ Action Program in Dak Lak Province by contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions from deforestation and forest degradation while promoting sustainable forest management and climate-resilient development.

According to Dak Lak Newspaper, the project is managed by the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, with the Department of Agriculture and Environment serving as the implementing agency. It has a total investment of VND 468.73 billion, financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The project will be implemented across 11 communes.

Representatives of the project management unit presented an overview of the implementation mechanism and the coordination plan among relevant sectors and local authorities to ensure the project's effective execution, thereby contributing to socio-economic development while strengthening forest protection and climate change adaptation in the province.

The project comprises three main components: establishing the enabling conditions for implementing Vietnam's National REDD+ Action Program; investing in climate-resilient, deforestation-free rural economic development; and project management, monitoring, and evaluation.

Under the implementation plan, the project will finance the construction of essential infrastructure, including rural roads, irrigation canal systems, forest management and protection stations, forest patrol roads, and other facilities supporting sustainable production as well as forest resource management and conservation.

Overall, the project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from deforestation and forest degradation, promote deforestation-free agricultural development and value chains, and improve local livelihoods while enhancing communities' resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change.
