Viet Nam, RoK discuss digital transformation in weather and hydrological services

A workshop on digital transformation in weather and hydrological services between Viet Nam and Republic of Korea is expected to take place in HCMC in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The HCMC People’s Committee has approved a plan to organize the Viet Nam-RoK Digital Transformation (DX) Workshop on weather and hydrological services.

Under the plan, the HCMC Department of Agriculture and Environment will lead the organization of the workshop in cooperation with the Korea IT Cooperation Center (KICC), which operates under the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA). The workshop aims to strengthen the exchange of information and experience and explore opportunities for cooperation with RoK partners, in line with the city’s international integration strategy.

Earlier, the HCMC Department of Agriculture and Environment submitted Document No. 26818/SNNMT-KTTV to the city’s People’s Committee seeking approval to organize the workshop, which is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of 2026.

KICC has proposed co-hosting the event to introduce digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, weather and hydrological monitoring equipment, and early warning technologies developed by RoK companies.

The workshop will also highlight the capabilities of companies belonging to the Korea Meteorological Industry Association (KMIA), while providing an opportunity to discuss the current situation, needs and development priorities of weather and hydrological services in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event is also expected to establish a cooperation channel between NIPA, KMIA and the HCMC Department of Agriculture and Environment, creating a foundation for further cooperation in the sector.

KICC plans to share information on monitoring equipment and introduce technologies and solutions from two or three RoK meteorological companies. It will also present the RoK’s current weather and hydrological monitoring, forecasting and early warning systems, including AI-based forecasting and warning technologies.

Other topics will include the monitoring systems and weather and hydrological network in southern provinces, as well as challenges and cooperation needs in the sector.

After reviewing the proposal from the RoK side, the HCMC Department of Agriculture and Environment said the city needs to invest in and upgrade its specialized weather and hydrological monitoring network.

This includes modern equipment for specialized monitoring facilities, as well as systems to operate these facilities after construction. The city also needs solutions for storing monitoring data and connecting and sharing data between central and local authorities.

The city also wants to make better use of local weather and hydrological data to support socio-economic development plans and strategies. Other priorities include forecasting and early warning models for disaster prevention and response, support for regulating water releases from reservoirs and river basins, and weather and hydrological information for different sectors.

The city also sees a need for clear coordination mechanisms for operating monitoring systems, sharing data and managing and using specialized weather and hydrological information.

The HCMC Department of Agriculture and Environment said the international workshop would give the city an opportunity to access the RoK’s advanced weather and hydrological technologies and promote digital transformation in monitoring, forecasting and early warning.

These efforts are expected to strengthen the city’s capacity to prevent and respond to natural disasters while supporting sustainable socio-economic development.
