Japan proposes waste sorting project in Hue

Hue City recently worked with the Kyoto Environmental Activities Association (Japan) to discuss cooperation in environmental protection and sustainable development.

At the meeting, representatives of the Kyoto Environmental Activities Association (KEAA) introduced a project to support the development of community-based mechanisms for waste reduction and segregation under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s Development Partnership Program.

The project is expected to be implemented in Kim Long, Phu Xuan, and Thuan An wards, aiming to develop waste reduction and segregation models tailored to each area's specific conditions, strengthen local officials' capacity, increase community participation, and promote waste reuse and recycling.

Professor Emeritus Tatsuro Niikawa, Chairman of the Kyoto Environmental Activities Association, said the association has extensive experience in environmental protection and community-based waste management. Through the project in Hue, KEAA aims to share Kyoto’s experience, transfer source-separation models suited to local conditions, and strengthen communication, training, and public awareness of environmental protection, particularly among younger generations.

“The effectiveness of waste management depends greatly on active community participation. Therefore, the project will focus on raising awareness, changing behavior, and encouraging people to separate waste at source, contributing to a greener, cleaner, more beautiful, and sustainable Hue,” Professor Tatsuro Niikawa said.

Vice Chairman of the Hue City People’s Committee Tran Huu Thuy Giang highly appreciated the support of the Kyoto city authorities and the Kyoto Environmental Activities Association (KEAA) in promoting environmental cooperation with Hue City.

The project to support the development of community-based waste reduction and segregation mechanisms in Hue City will not only help improve waste management and environmental protection but also enable the city to learn from Kyoto’s experience, models, and advanced solutions for waste segregation, collection, and treatment.

“To ensure the project is implemented effectively and sustainably, it is necessary to strengthen coordination among departments, sectors, local authorities, and educational institutions throughout the implementation process. At the same time, cooperation between universities in Kyoto and Hue University should be explored in environmental education and scientific research. After the pilot phase, the parties should jointly assess the results as a basis for scaling up the model across the city,” Mr. Giang emphasized.
