Green transformation in tourism must begin with concrete actions; it cannot remain just slogans or commitments. It needs to become a reality in every destination. This approach was the consensus among experts at the Forum "Developing Green Destinations – Elevating Vietnam Tourism" held on April 11th.

Speaking at the Forum, Mr. Vu The Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA), stated: "In terms of practical tools, it is clear that a set of specific criteria is needed for businesses and management boards of tourism destinations to gradually self-assess, improve, and enhance their capacity to implement green transformation in the tourism industry." He also emphasized that green transformation is a long journey, requiring the cooperation of all stakeholders.

From a research perspective, Prof. Nguyen Van Dinh, People's Teacher and Director of the Institute of Tourism Economics, commented: "Green transformation is not just a trend but also an opportunity to reposition Vietnam's tourism industry." For him, green transformation not only helps protect the environment but also attracts tourists, strengthens the competitiveness of businesses, and provides a more positive experience for visitors.

In 2024, Vietnam's tourism industry achieved impressive numbers, but our focus is not only on growth in quantity but also on green growth that benefits everyone. In this regard, Mr. Patrick Harvermann, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Vietnam, stated that UNDP continues to support projects aimed at reducing plastic waste in Vietnam's tourism sector and considers this a long-term strategy.

On this journey, the media is considered a "strategic link." With its role in influencing good practices, warning against harmful behaviors, and raising awareness, the media promotes responsible tourism – an essential element of sustainable tourism.
