Both step up cooperation in agriculture, environment, agricultural trade, technology transfer and green transition.

The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Viet Nam and Japan continues to be strengthened in a deeper, more substantive and effective manner. Key areas of cooperation include agriculture, agricultural trade, green transition, climate change response and human resource development.

In 2023, Viet Nam and Japan upgraded their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World. Japan is currently one of Viet Nam’s leading partners in official development assistance (ODA), investment and trade. In 2025, Japan provided more than USD 600 million in ODA, recorded total investment of nearly USD 4 billion in Viet Nam, and bilateral trade turnover exceeded USD 50 billion for the first time. The two countries aim to raise bilateral trade turnover to USD 60 billion by 2030.

In the agriculture and environment sectors, the two sides have established several cooperation mechanisms, including the Medium- and Long-term Vision for Viet Nam-Japan Agricultural Cooperation for 2025–2030, the Environmental Policy Dialogue, the Maritime Policy Dialogue, and cooperation in disaster risk prevention, response and mitigation.

Viet Nam’s exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products to Japan increased from USD 3.17 billion in 2020 to USD 4.94 billion in 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, export value reached USD 3.38 billion, up 3.5% year-on-year. The two sides are working to accelerate the completion of market access procedures for Vietnamese pomelos and Japanese grapes in 2026.

Beyond trade, there remains considerable potential for cooperation in green agriculture, smart agriculture, digital transformation, science and technology, emissions reduction, the circular economy and environmental technologies.

At the local level, Yamanashi Prefecture is recognized for its strengths in high-quality agriculture, fruit production, production and processing technologies, smart agriculture and environmental technologies. These strengths provide a basis for both sides to expand exchanges, facilitate technology transfer, connect businesses, and promote investment.

As part of its working visit to Japan from November 5 to 11, 2026, a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) is scheduled to hold meetings with Japanese central government agencies, local authorities and businesses.

Key areas of focus include co-chairing the Viet Nam-Japan Environmental Policy Dialogue and promoting cooperation in the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), greenhouse gas emissions reduction, the carbon market, green transition and the circular economy. The delegation will also seek to strengthen cooperation in maritime governance, agriculture, agricultural trade, science and technology, and value chain development.

MAE Minister Trinh Viet Hung is scheduled to hold talks with the Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, visit production, technology and processing models, and co-chair the Viet Nam-Yamanashi Business Matching Conference.

The visit aims to translate the cooperation orientations and commitments between the two countries into concrete actions, delivering practical outcomes in policy, trade, investment, technology and market access.
