Can Tho City receives 7.7 billion VND for livelihoods, climate adaptation

The People's Committee of Can Tho City has just approved a grant to implement the project "Supporting livelihoods for residents and enhancing climate change adaptation capacity for communities in Can Tho City", funded by Merry Year International (MYI) / South Korea.

The project's long-term goal is to improve the quality of life for Can Tho City's residential communities by strengthening climate change response capacity and building a social security network.

In the short term, the project focuses on improving the local government's water management capacity to cope with climate change-induced crises through information and communication technology. Concurrently, it aims to establish a social security network for vulnerable groups, support livelihoods, and empower economically disadvantaged residents affected by climate change.

A notable component of the project is supporting the locality in upgrading and installing salinity monitoring stations, alongside investing in infrastructure that integrates information and communication technology to prevent and control damages caused by drought and salinity.

The project also aims to develop and manage infrastructure, organize usage guidelines, and provide training on system operation and administration to minimize damages from saltwater intrusion. In addition, the locality will be supported in assessing climate change vulnerability and enhancing climate change management capacity for grassroots authorities.

For the residents, the project will survey groups vulnerable to climate change; provide financial support to develop livelihoods and improve living conditions; and simultaneously offer economic knowledge training to help these groups gradually self-develop their livelihoods and enhance their quality of life. The project also sets the target of raising climate change awareness among the local community.

The project is implemented in Luong Tam and Vinh Vien communes, Can Tho City, with an execution period from the date of approval until November 26, 2028.

The total project capital is 948 million won, equivalent to 620,000 USD and approximately 16.114 billion VND. Of this, the non-refundable aid capital is 453 million won, equivalent to 296,000 USD, or about 7.7 billion VND.

The counterpart fund includes 2.5 billion VND from the state budget and 3.514 billion VND in counterpart contributions from the residents. Additionally, the project has 2.4 billion VND belonging to the initial phase of the livelihood support project.

Through livelihood support activities, enhanced water management, salinity monitoring, and adaptation capacity building, the project is expected to strengthen the community's resilience to climate change, especially among residential groups vulnerable to local drought and salinity impacts.
