Supporting women-led green transition initiatives

This project opens up opportunities for organizations, women’s groups, and local communities in five provinces: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Quang Nam, Bac Lieu, and Hue.

PWG is expected to be implemented from 2024 to 2029 as part of the “Women-Led Green Transition Partnership” program funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by Oxfam in Vietnam.

The project plans to fund 65 initiatives, with support of up to 1.65 billion VND (equivalent to 60,000 EUR) per initiative, with a timeframe of 12 to 18 months. The first funding round will focus on the theme: "Raising awareness, improving green livelihoods, ensuring decent employment opportunities, and enhancing women’s participation in the development and completion of climate change response policies." The project is expected to indirectly benefit approximately 7-10 million people by raising awareness and expanding access to green job opportunities.

The project aims to mitigate the impact and losses caused by climate change, while empowering women to participate more actively in environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives. In addition to supporting women in overcoming technological, finance, and information access barriers, the project will also contribute to realizing the National Climate Change Strategy by 2050, aiming for net-zero emissions. The EU is committed to supporting these initiatives over the next four years, laying the groundwork for gender equality efforts in environmental fields.

This project is significant as Vietnam is one of the countries most severely affected by climate change. Women and girls are among the most vulnerable groups to these risks due to limited access to resources, finances, and decision-making opportunities.

Acknowledging the critical role of women in digital and green transitions, many initiatives have been launched to support their deeper involvement in sustainable development processes. These projects not only help women access technology and finance but also empower them to become key agents in climate adaptation and the green economy.

Previously, the "Empower: Enhancing Women’s Economic Empowerment Through Green Transition" project, funded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and launched in early 2024, also aimed at helping women-led businesses access green finance, apply renewable technologies, and reduce carbon emissions. The project helps enhance women’s competitiveness in the green economy and allows them to contribute to global sustainable transition efforts.
