High-tech shrimp farming achieves yields of 40-60 tons per hectare, three to four times higher than traditional farming.
Data from the Vinh Long Fisheries and Islands Sub-Department in August showed that high-tech shrimp farming models in the province deliver significantly higher efficiency, with yields several times higher than those of traditional farming methods.
Accordingly, average yields in high-tech shrimp farming areas range from 40-60 tonnes per hectare, compared with only about 10-15 tonnes per hectare under traditional farming. By effectively controlling pond conditions, proactively preventing disease, and applying scientific and technical advances, these models help increase output on the same area of farmland.

Photo: Ho Thao.Notably, although high-tech shrimp farming currently accounts for only about 32.35% of the area devoted to whiteleg shrimp farming, it contributes 56.68% of whiteleg shrimp output and 54.03% of the province’s total brackish-water shrimp production.
The model’s efficiency stems from the integrated application of technical solutions in production management. Farmers can monitor and control key factors such as water quality, dissolved oxygen levels, and pond conditions, thereby reducing disease risks, lowering costs, and shortening the farming cycle.
In the first six months of 2026, Vinh Long had 6,325 hectares of intensive, high-density shrimp farming, with output reaching approximately 61,000 tonnes. Farming areas are concentrated in coastal localities such as Tan Thuy, Bao Thanh, Thoi Thuan, Thanh Phuoc, Thanh Phong, and Thanh Hai. Many areas have received synchronized investment in irrigation, three-phase electricity, and internal transport infrastructure, creating favorable conditions for linkages among farmers, cooperatives, and processing enterprises.
Under the plan, by the end of 2026, the province aims to develop more than 8,175 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming areas, an increase of over 675 hectares from 2025. Coastal localities will be prioritized to attract business investment and develop large-scale, concentrated farming areas linked to value chains.
Alongside expanding farming areas, the province also plans to accelerate digital transformation, environmental monitoring, traceability, and the development of circular and low-emission farming models to improve shrimp quality and meet increasingly stringent requirements in export markets.
