Hue University is partnering with businesses to research ways to reduce methane emissions from rice production, promoting greener and more sustainable agriculture in the locality.

Hue University recently held a working session with Green Carbon Joint Stock Company and Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Co., Ltd. to discuss research into reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation in Hue City. Representatives from Hue City’s Department of Agriculture and Environment also attended the meeting. The two companies were represented by Mr. Haruki Yokoyama, Viet Nam Project Manager.

During the meeting, the two companies presented an overview of their ongoing activities and pilot projects in Viet Nam, as well as the Agreen platform. The parties then discussed potential cooperation in carbon project research and development, green agriculture, and the possibility of implementing pilot projects in the locality.

On this occasion, Hue University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Green Carbon Joint Stock Company and Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Co., Ltd.

Under the MoU, the parties will establish a framework for research cooperation on emission reduction in crop production. They will also coordinate technical support for rice cultivation and calculate methane (CH₄) emissions from paddy rice production in Hue City. The agreement aims to facilitate the implementation of pilot projects and large-scale initiatives over a 10-year period, from 2026 to 2036.

The MoU also provides a basis for developing projects to quantify methane emission reductions achieved by applying alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation techniques to rice cultivation in Hue City, replacing traditional continuous flooding practices. The research will also estimate the contribution of CH₄ to global warming potential (GWP) and provide key information to support greenhouse gas inventories and analyses of carbon emission reductions in rice production.
