The Vietnamese delegation just attended the 100% Alliance International Conference in the Indo-Pacific region took place in Japan.

The event, co-hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Canada Pavilion at World Expo 2025 and the World Resources Institute (WRI), attracted the participation of many coastal countries, international organizations and leading ocean experts.

The 100% Alliance is a groundbreaking global initiative that calls on countries and partners to protect, restore and sustainably manage all ocean spaces. Co-chaired by France, Chile and Australia, supported by the High-Level Panel on a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) and coordinated by WRI, it is a voluntary, inclusive platform for countries to share knowledge, learn from each other and act together towards a common goal of a blue ocean.

Vietnam attended the Conference with the representative of Mr. Nguyen Binh Minh, Deputy Director of the National Center for Sea and Island Information and Data, Vietnam Sea and Islands Administration (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), multi-sectoral technical officer negotiating the BBNJ Agreement (Biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction). Attending the Conference demonstrates Vietnam's interest and proactiveness in approaching new international initiatives, in line with the Party and State's orientation for sustainable development of the marine economy.

Based on receiving information about the Alliance, Vietnamese authorities will consider and study participation in this initiative, in accordance with the Party and State's policies and orientations for sustainable development of the marine economy, strengthening cooperation in the region and the world to address common challenges and learn from good practices of other countries, sharing experiences, receiving technology and support resources from international partners.

The High-Level Panel on a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) currently brings together 18 member countries on six continents, with the vision of “100% Protection, 100% Sustainability”. After announcing the comprehensive agenda “Transformation for a Sustainable Ocean Economy: A Vision of Protection, Production and Prosperity”, the Ocean Panel has vigorously implemented the development of national Sustainable Ocean Plans (SOPs). All member countries are committed to completing the SOPs by 2025, demonstrating the highest level of political determination towards a sustainable ocean economy.

In addition, the Ocean Panel promotes financial mobilization for ocean action through the development of blue bonds and ocean investment funds, as well as encouraging nature-based solutions, such as the protection of mangrove forests, seagrass beds and offshore wind power development – areas of particular interest to the international community.

In the context of the global ocean being heavily impacted by climate change, pollution and overexploitation, the 100% Alliance is expected to create a fundamental shift in awareness and action of countries. According to the recommendations of a network of more than 350 global experts, only 100% sustainable management of marine space can ensure Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) on conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.
