Raising awareness about bear protection. Photo: V.D.From April 23 to May 22, more than 100 students took part in a series of activities to learn about the reality of bear farming in Viet Nam. They also collected and cared for medicinal plants commonly used as alternatives to bear bile, including plantain, mugwort and cordyline, at their homes.
After nearly a month of nurturing the plants, the students brought their healthy potted herbs to the “Trading plants to help protect bears” festival.

Photo: V.D.Organizers awarded nine first prizes, 18 second prizes, and 54 third prizes in recognition of the students’ enthusiasm and creativity as “young conservationists”. All medicinal plants collected during the program were later planted on the school grounds, helping create a meaningful green space for students.
As part of the program, 27 top-performing students were invited to visit the Viet Nam Bear Rescue Center at Bach Ma National Park. There, they had the chance to observe rescued bears up close and hear inspiring stories about wildlife conservation efforts.

Photo: V.D.Mr. Nguyen Vu Linh, Director of Bach Ma National Park, said the program not only helped students better understand the harmful impacts of bear bile consumption and illegal bear farming, but also encouraged a love for nature and awareness of wildlife protection from an early age.
“Every tree planted represents a new source of hope”, he said. “Through these hands-on activities, students can develop a more positive understanding of biodiversity conservation and the role humans play in protecting natural habitats, while also spreading the message of saying no to bear bile and promoting a love for nature within the community”.
