The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just issued Decision 2878/QD-BNNMT approving the Program on biodiversity investigation, inventory, and monitoring at nature reserves until 2030. Implemented nationwide, the program aims to fully assess the current status and trends in fluctuations of ecosystems and species, while creating a unified data platform to support nature management and protection.

Photo: VAN.The program concretizes the Scheme "Inventory, monitoring, reporting, and building a national biodiversity database by 2030, with a vision to 2050". The tasks for the 2026-2030 period clearly define the contents, progress, implementing units, and expected results, thereby strengthening coordination among central and local agencies and nature reserve management boards.
Synchronous ecosystem monitoring
The focus of the Program is to organize biodiversity investigations, inventories, and monitoring in nature reserves. For natural ecosystems, monitoring focuses on the area and quality of four main groups: forest ecosystems, wetlands, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
For fauna, specialized agencies will determine the number of individuals, population sizes, species composition, and frequency of occurrence. Investigative activities pay special attention to endemic species; endangered, precious, and rare species prioritized for protection; and threatened species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book.
For flora, the program focuses on assessing the distribution area, composition, and fluctuation trends of species, especially endemic, endangered, precious, and rare plants. Based on the collected results, units will propose suitable management, restoration, and conservation solutions for each area and ecosystem.
The investigation not only aims to update the species lists but also helps to early identify adverse changes and the risks of population and habitat quality decline. This serves as an important scientific basis for adjusting plans to manage and protect natural resources at reserves.
Building a unified digital database
Another crucial task is to build a biodiversity database system at nature reserves in a synchronous and unified manner, capable of integrating with the national biodiversity database.

Photo: VAN.The digital database will synthesize indicators of the area and quality of forest ecosystems, wetlands, coral reefs, and seagrass beds, while simultaneously updating the numbers, composition, and distribution of flora and fauna species.
Map data is compiled in the VN-2000 coordinate system, illustrating the extent of ecosystems, species distribution areas, and the locations of endangered, precious, and rare species prioritized for protection or listed as threatened in the Vietnam Red Data Book.
The program requires promoting the application of science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation in the process of investigating, monitoring, processing, and managing data. Concurrently, officials at nature reserves will be trained in investigative techniques, species taxonomy, data collection, reporting, and database operations.
